Telling people i am an artist fells like the beginning of a joke.

It must shock the hearer when i say i am an artist, because the response seems to be overdone. "wow, that's great" or "what do you want to do with that?" maybe i get "(spit take) cough, sputter... what?"
i am seen as a magical retard by the general population. they see the artist as someone that can do things that no other mortal can do and at the same time they believe life will break the artist for his/her optimistic embrace of life. As my parents (general population) you want to protect me. "Gian, look fire, HOT!" you parents also want me to transform the fire to ice cream. enough with the metaphors.
i am writing this post because right now my life feels like it is on hold. Andrea and i are waiting for grad schools to respond to my application. this time has made me think about what it means to be an artist and how crazy it is. i found this talk on creativity. the writer Elizabeth Gilbert is good at explaining creativity and artists. you will know me a bit better after you see her explanation.

This may sound banal, but I think the fact that you enjoy art so much makes a huge difference. That you you take the intellectual aspect of art seriously and understand the ideas that underly a creation or statement makes it so you can be taken seriously in your craft. I've met a lot of "artists" who have no clue what ideas and influences are the giants on whose shoulders they stand. They have the talent to draw, sculpt, etc., but lack the artistic knowledge to enrich the consumer's understanding.

Good luck with the grad school applications.

Gian,
I loved this. It made me cry. It is a little bit scary to be on this journey with you as an artist because of the very things you mentioned. There are those "Parents" of the world that look at us with such pity. But ultimately it is far more terrifying to think about not letting you reach your destiny or watching you try NOT to do the things you were meant to do. You will be brilliant because you were put in earth to be a creator. I love that about you.

oh gian, that made me cry, too. especially because we all have brilliance that we are afraid of. and only you can decide what you do with your very own and unique kind of brilliance, and that can be alot of pressure, right? i love elizabeth so much. isn't she special?
